Environment related debates

Shopping plastic bags - what's my opinion?

During the first (organisational) lecture as an example of current debates awareness there was mentioned an aspect according to the environment and plastic bags charge in the UK. Do I think it's right to make customers pay 5p per bag? Is the condition of environment important to me?
 - Yes, it is.

In my opinion everyone should at least care theoretically about the environment we all live in. It's about quality of our own lives and the future of our kids, of next generations and the whole Earth. So I think we all should somehow responsible for it. It works fine in my home country, in Poland (some shops charge for the bag and in some of them the charge is rather quite a bit bigger than here). I don't see why it wouldn't work here in the UK.
I usually carry my own bag with me and I only use plastic ones for certain things such as raw food or chemicals to separate the shopping. Even as small payment as 5p will make a lot of people to think of environment or just simply of willing to spend slightly more, especially when someone needs larger quantity or shops this way so often (it could be ok few times but spending extra every day can make a difference). I have to admit it can be really frustrating to forget own bag and being sort of forced to purchase or even take for free plastic bags while doing bigger shopping.
I think it's right decision to start charging for them as the law says and I think it could easily go up to 15p. I think using paper bags would be better solution as much as raising awareness of need to recycle. Apparently the best option would be the special green bag however I think even just having couple of good quality bags of any kind would be good if we use them constantly.

Global clean water crisis - Belo's water mosaic project (2012-2013)

Going through my Facebook page today I have discovered this amazing live project of the Canadian artist Belo, who using his innovative creative skills wanted to raise public awareness of drinkable water crisis. It involved over one hundred volunteers and made people think of an issue that actually exists, as probably most people in Europe or America don't really consider because they're not lacking this precious substance themselves. A lot of people probably don't care a lot about how much water they're using or the only consideration of reducing to waste is their financial situation. A lot of us have bad habits that could be simply changed with a bit of empathy for the Earth. Personally I hate to waste water at home for both reasons. Although I am not perfect too and sometimes I could possibly do more about the issue. Possibly I could try to do more as a graphic designer, taking part of the campaign of the similar nature and relating to managing our environment in better way.

It's incredible how simple materials, simple items we just put in the bin every day, can change their meaning with a pinch of good idea and skills, and send a great message to the world; stop people for a minute of consideration. It's amazing how the artist can make this beautiful art installation out of basically nothing. It uses sustainable materials and consists of 66.000 recycled paper cups, rainwater and a vegetable based dye. The amount of dye varies and the colours represent the level of water pollution in different parts of the world.

It reminds me of an exhibition at Hayward Gallery in London we visited as a group last year where I really enjoyed Tony Cragg's installation made from recycled materials/objects called 'Britain Seen from the North' (1981). It made a great impression from the distance; fantastic decoration made out of waste.

Belo's specific technique makes his art almost three dimensional and textural. His water cap mosaic project has to be seen from different perspective and makes a beautiful image of life in the first - maternal stage. It shows human's need for water from the beginning and through generations. It emphasizes the responsibility of us all, because each one of us come from the same place - mother's womb.
Through his creative practice he makes people curious, involved, and he forces them to look differently into his art. His approach and appearance of his work makes the audience to analyse and being more aware of environmental and social issues. As I have read on the website it's really important personal aspect and wish for his work. I really enjoyed looking more into this particular project by Belo.

Sustainability and recycling

Today I have discovered an interesting concept for recycling ('recycle for Essex') while visiting library with my son. Up to 97% of electrical waste collected across Essex is used to make new products. The dinosaur and snake present on the pictures above are a couple out of many other things created out of recycled items. Great initiative of our local area! (here: library at Braintree, Essex).
